In a surprise move, legendary Scottish music duo The Proclaimers have announced that they are re-releasing their 1988 folk rock classic “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” in solidarity with the new community of Aviator Fields.
The song has stood the test of time in Australia for more than three decades despite not officially being named after the only words in the song that anybody knows. Industry heavyweights attribute the song’s perennial success to its overall accessibility and appeal, which probably means that a Scottish accent is easy for an Australian to do at 1:57am before the pub shuts. If you had a pub to go to. Which you don’t, because Aviator Fields.
Contrary to popular belief, this is not the only song The Proclaimers have released. They also did that “Ahmon Ma Whey” song which is pretty good until you remember that it sounds like the type of thing your kids would make you sing in the car on a long road trip to like the train station or the swimming pool.
Recently in an exclusive chat on-board the only bus in Aviator Fields, Craig Reid revealed exactly why the band were so moved by the plight of Aviator Fields residents;
“There’s a ned up the back offer bus asking folk if they wanty fight his dug.”
Right. Whatever that means. Well said.
The lyrics for the new version of the song will be:
When I wake up, well I know there’s gonna be,
There’s gonna be a panic on when I see the traffic queue
When I go out, yeah I know there’s gonna be
There’s gonna be no bus to take me to the zoo
If I get drunk, well I know I’m gonna be
I’m gonna be at home ’cause there’s nothing here to do
And if I have kids, yeah I know I’m gonna be
I’m gonna be wishing the school wasn’t overdueBut I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walks a thousand miles
To get to work by fourWhen I’m not working, yes I know I’m gonna be
I’m gonna be annoyed that there’s no jobs to do
And when the money, comes in for the work I do
I know my account will probably still be overdrew
When I get home (if I get home) well I know it’s gonna be
It’s gonna be because I grew some wings and flew
And if I grow-old (when I grow-old) well I know I’m gonna be
Wishing we had a spare hospital or twoBut I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walks a thousand miles
To to find the nearest storeDa da da (da da da)

It’s gonna be the RAAF base mentioned hitherto
And when they’re flying, well I know I’m gonna dream
I’m gonna dream I realized before I moved in here with you
When it rains (in our floodplain) well I know I’m gonna be
I’m gonna be wishing I bought along my own canoe
And when I come home (when I come home) yes I know I’m gonna be
I’m gonna be upset to find we’ve been broken into
I’m gonna be upset to find we’ve been broken intoBut I would walk 500 miles
And I would walk 500 more
Just to be the man who walks a thousand miles
